BIRTHS
Barbara & Marvin Spielman of Cupertino
joyfully announce the birth of their first granddaughter, Bayla
Gertie Polston. The Spielmans have five grandsons so Bayla’s
arrival on Oct. 22 was quite special. Bayla’s parents are Lisa Spielman
& Joshua Polston of Oakland and her big brother is Sid. Bayla was
named after her maternal great-grandmothers, Bertha Spielman and Gertrude
Siegal. She is also the granddaughter of Bernie & Dr. Betty Polston
of Tarzana, CA.
Lena and Jussi Rajna of Beth David in Saratoga and Irv
Lippman of Del Ray Beach, FL are the proud grandparents of Sonya
Jill Lippman who was born April 12. She is the daughter of nEva
& Bruce Lippman of San Francisco. In a naming ceremony July
2 at Congregation Emanu-El in San Francisco, Sonja was given her late
grandmother Beverly Lippmann’s Hebrew name, Batya Chaia.
Emily & Howard Gannes, also of Beth David, are the
delighted grandparents of Avi Meir Wiederhorn, born May 12 to Rebecca
& Jeremy Wiederhorn. Jeremy is the rabbi at Midbar Kodesh in Henderson,
NV. Avi Meir joins sisters Meital, 5, and Ayelet, 3.
On May 22 Aurianne & Adam Dorsay of Willow Glen welcomed
their first child into the world. He is Avin Benjamin Dorsay
and his proud grandparents are Dorothy & Benjamin Dorsay
and Tamar Jacobs. Avin was named for his maternal grandfather, Alvin Jacobs.
Aurianne and Adam are members of Beth David.
June 20 marked the births of two sons of Chabad rabbis in the Bay Area.
Rabbi Aaron & Frumie Cunin welcomed Avrohom
Dovid into their home on that date. He joins his sisters, Rochel,
2, and Shevie, 1. Rabbi Cunin is the
rabbi of Chabad of S. Jose. Rabbi Shlomie & Devorah
Leah Chein are the proud parents of Dovid who
joins his brother, Mendel, 3. Rabbi Chein
is the rabbi at the Chabad Student Center in Santa Cruz. These two boys
born on the same day are first cousins – Rabbi Cunin and Rebbetzin
Chein are brother and sister!
Long-time members of Emanu-El, Carol & Henry Thailer,
are the proud grandparents of Carson Winter. This Yankee Doodle baby was
born July 4 and weighed 7 pounds-4 ounces. His parents, Jennifer &
Steven Winter live in San Diego with his brother Austin, 2. He is the
eighth grandchild of the Thailers. Steven Winter’s parents, Andrea
& Michael Goodman belong to Temple Beth Am in La Jolla, CA.

were pleased to welcome Charles Joseph Hammer and Ruby
Milena Hammer on July 16. Eric & Susan Hammer
are quite busy these days caring for the twins who join their brother
Wyatt Golden in Brookdale, CA. The other grandparents are Mary
& Joseph Hammer.
WEDDING NEWS
WEDDINGS:
Rocky Point, overlooking Big Sur near Point Lobos was the spectacular
setting for the wedding of Lori Aronson and Gregory
Milstein. Rabbi Melanie Aron of Shir Hadash
officiated. The groom is the son of the late Martin Milstein,
Esther Milstein Gralnik and Rusty Gralnik. The
bride is the daughter of Robin & Steven Haas of West Bloomfield, MI.
Gregory graduated from Los Gatos High School and attended college in the
area as well as music school in Los Angeles. He has a marketing, health
and fitness business. Lori earned a Masters in Social Work at San Jose
State University where she is currently pursuing a second master’s
degree in marriage and family counseling.
Jodi Tanowitz & Kevin Weisman were married May 22.
Rabbi Leslie Alexander officiated at the ceremony which
was held at the Menlo Circus Club. Jodi grew up in Los Gatos and currently
teaches preschool at Wilshire Blvd. Temple in Los Angeles. She is the
daughter of Jyl & David Jurman and Jack &
Laurie Tanowitz. Kevin plays Tech Wiz Marshall in ABC’s
television show” Alias” and is the son of Andrea Weisman and
Mark Weisman.
CALLED TO THE TORAH:
David Katz, son of Robert &
Ronit Katz of Cupertino, became a bar mitzvah on May 21 at Beth
David. His grandparents, Nadra & Avinoam Ben-Abraham of Israel and
Selma Katz of Boston were in attendance as were his older brothers Eric
and Daniel. David is interested in judo and recently
placed fourth in a national judo championship.
May 28 was the date of Joshua Remba’s bar mitzvah.
His parents, Susie & Ron Remba of Sunnyvale were
very proud of him and his achievement. His older brother Mitchell,
his brother Daniel and Daniel’s wife Emily
were happy to share this special moment in Joshua’s life with the
community at Beth David.
Alexander Karel of Saratoga celebrated his bar mitzvah
at Beth David on July 2. Alex’s parents are Ellen &
Steven Karel and his grandparents Carolyn & David
Karel of Santa Clara were there for this special occasion. Alex
is a student at Miller Middle School where he is on the track team. He
is also active in Boy Scouts.
Liana Riskin, a student at Sunnyvale Middle School, celebrated
her bat mitvah at Beth David on July 16. Her younger brother Michael
opened the ark and joined with her in singing Ein Keiloheinu. Her grandparents,
Morrie Kibrick of Palo Alto and Dr. Jules &
Shirley Riskin of Scotts Valley, came to enjoy this special occasion.
Her Aunt Tusia Amit and her cousin Orit Karen traveled from Israel, and
her Uncle Ed Pine came in from Massachusetts. In addition to her religious
studies, Liana is interested in roller coasters and rock climbing.
Mazel tov to Daniel Umansky on his bar mitvah on July
23 at Beth David. Daniel’s parents Ilya & Irina
were joined by their parents Efim Umansky and Musia Pustilnik and Michael
& Rosa Lulko of Canada. His older sister Sophia and
his brother Mitchell were also present for this happy
occasion.
Warm weather was very much in evidence at Shir Hadash on August 6. Three
brothers had their bar mitzvah that day. Twins Jason
and Zachary Baker, whose birthdays were July 28, joined
their older brother Matthew for this festive occasion.
Grandparents Robert & Shirley Long of San Jose and
Edward Baker of Florida helped to celebrate this special moment in the
lives of the three young men. Rabbi Melanie Aron officiated.
Shir Hadash was also the site for the bat mitzvah of Sarah Wolfe
on August 13. Sarah is the daughter of Carol & Abbott Wolfe
and her siblings are Drew and Ricky Wolfe.
