Obituaries: May 2004

Annette Cass

June 1, 1922-March 10, 2004, leaves behind her husband of 57 years, Bert Cass who resides at Chai House, their daughters, Beth & Roger Kerrey and Adrienne & Michael Friedman of Sunnyvale and three grandchildren, Greg and Jeffrey Friedman of Sunnyvale and David Kerrey of San Jose. Mrs. Cass retired from a long career as a clerical worker for the NYC Dept. of Relocation. In retirement she drove cancer patients to the doctor, volunteered as a clerical worker for the American Diabetic Association, and won the Lee Axelrod Award for her many charitable endeavors including organizing clothing drives for Sacred Heart Career Closet. In her memory charitable donations may be made to Pathways Home Health, Hospice and Continuous Care at www.hospice.homecare.org.

Jutta Kaplan

May 10, 1921-Dec. 5, 2003, was the wife of the late Simon Kaplan, and is survived by her daughter, Georgette Silver and son-in-law Dr. Kenneth Silver. A member of the South Bay Holocaust Survivor Group, Mrs. Kaplan was active in the JCC seniors group and took many classes. A special education teacher in NY, Jutta was born in Germany and at age 18 moved to England where she met her husband.

Beth Kerrey

Oct. 11, 1947-March 22, 2004, was born in NY. She was married 21 years to her husband Roger before she died of lung cancer just twelve days after her mother’s death. Mrs. Kerrey also is survived by her son David of San Jose, father Bert Cass of Chai House, sister Adrienne Friedman, brother-in-law Mike Friedman and nephews Greg and Jeffrey all of Sunnyvale. Beth was an active member of Shir Hadash since she arrived in CA in 1990. She worked in the food industry, managing several restaurants, but most recently worked for Pathways Home Health, Hospice and Continuous Care. A creative person, Beth helped with many Temple functions at Shir Hadash, including catering many events, and she also taught cooking classes. Marcus (Liebster) Malin

March 18, 1917-Nov. 14, 2003, was married to the late Mary (Miriam) Liebster, and to the late Florence Malin. Born in Poland, Marcus was a Holocaust survivor who worked for Levi Strauss & Co. once he moved to San Jose. He was a founding member and Torah reader at Congregation Sinai. Mr. Malin is survived by his children, Jack Liebster of Corte Madera, CA, Leon Liebster of Cupertino, and Evelyn McGarry of San Jose, and his two grandchildren, Heather McGarry and Daniel Liebster. Donations in his memory may be made to Congregation Sinai.

Esther Margolis

August 21, 1911-Oct. 19, 2003, was a member of Congregation Sinai since 1956 along with her husband Sam Margolis, who died in 1963. Mrs. Margolis is survived by her children, Phyllis MacDonald of San Jose and Steve Margolis of Lewiston, CA. She has four grandchildren, Julie Streede of San Jose, Harold DeMar of Utah, and Bruce MacDonald and Sheri MacDonald both of San Jose. Her six great-grandchildren are Jonathan, Jacob, Anthony, Nichole, Thomas and Breanne. Mrs. Margolis moved to the Bay Area in 1948, and passed on after a lengthy illness.

Samuel Sandoval

11-month-old son of Helen & Carlos Sandoval passed away peacefully on April 1, 2004, at Stanford Hospital. After fighting and winning his battle with leukemia, Samuel succumbed to a secondary infection that took his young life. The many hearts he touched in his short time here are a tribute to his joyful disposition. Samuel’s big brother, Jonathan, and his parents, Helen (a former New Bridges board member) & Carlos survive him. Following a private graveside burial service, friends and family celebrated Samuel’s life at a memorial service on April 4, at Congregation Beth Am, Los Altos Hills. The family requests that donations be made to the Samuel Sandoval Memorial Fund, payable to the Lucille Packard Foundation for Children’s Health, 770 Welch Road, Suite 350, Palo Alto, CA 94304.

Harry Silver

August 17, 1928-February 22, 2004, former husband of Sharon Silver, is survived by four children, Claudia Chargel of Corralitos, Dr. Kenneth Silver of San Jose, Sondra Westly of El Dorado Hills and Lisa Silver-Walker of Berkeley. His four grandchildren are Simon Silver, Simone Silver, Jacob Silver and Lev Samuels Silver-Walker. Harry, who most recently lived at the Chai House, worked as a mechanical engineer for Lockheed for many years. A Beth David member, Mr. Silver played sax and clarinet in the Cupertino and San Jose Metro Bands.
