Beth David hosts Mother’s Day Shabbat dinner

Congregation Beth David invites the Jewish community to a family-style Shabbat dinner and program honoring Jewish mothers, past and present, beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 7, the Shabbat before Mother’s Day. The evening will include a gourmet dinner, programming for adults and children, and family Kabbalat Shabbat services, which begin at 7:30 p.m. For more information, call Elizabeth Sesma at 366-9117, or visit www.beth-david.org.

B’nai mitzvah story telling contest

In celebration of its 13th “Bar Mitzvah” year, the San Jose Jewish Film Festival is sponsoring a writing contest about unique and memorable bar or bat mitzvahs.

Winners will receive four free tickets to any film offered at the 2004 San Jose Jewish Film Festival, which will be held Oct. 21-Nov. 22 at the new Camera Cinemas 12. In addition, winners will tell their story by video, with the segments broadcast through the SJJFF’s website. Some stories may be told to live audiences at the film festival.

The SJJF will accept stories ranging in time from the 1930s to 2004, taking place from San Jose to Singapore. Festival organizers request information about pictures, film and video that is available to accompany stories.

Experienced care givers needed for seniors

Jewish Family Service is seeking experienced caregivers to work for program SAFE - Secure Alternative for Seniors. Caregiver services may include housecleaning, shopping, cooking, personal care, and companionship. This fee-based service helps seniors stay at home and maintain the quality of their life. Groundbreaking ceremony at Sinai

Congregation Sinai will celebrate the first step toward its new campus at a groundbreaking party on Sunday, May 23, at 12 noon. The community is invited to join in the celebration.

The 50-year-old congregation will construct a new campus at its existing location to accommodate the growth in its membership. Local political and community leaders and Sinai founders will attend the ceremony. For more information contact Linda Brandt at 264-8542.

Hebrew & religious school teachers needed

Teachers are needed for our area Hebrew and religious schools. If you are interested please send your resume to the Council on Jewish Education at dmiller@jvalley.org and we will circulate it to our area schools. Avocational teachers who wish to give back to their community are encouraged to apply, and the CJE will run a series of classes on the basics of classroom life. Israeli Cultural Day

Lag B’Omer hike & picnic

Congregation Beth David will host a Lag B’Omer Hike & Picnic at Picchetti Ranch in Cupertino on May 9, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Omer is traditionally a period of semi-mourning, however, on Lag B’Omer, restrictions are lifted for the day. It’s customary to celebrate the holiday with picnics, outdoor games and bonfires.

Palo Alto resident chairs Women’s American ORT Convention

Palo Alto resident Randi Brenowitz held the honor of serving as chairperson for Women’s American ORT’s (Organization for Rehabilitation through Training) National Triennial Convention in New York City, April 30 through May 1.

Women’s American ORT is the largest private contributor to World ORT, which educates nearly 300,000 students around the world. The organizations strengthen the worldwide Jewish community by empowering people to achieve economic self-sufficiency through technological and vocational education.

Brenowitz, who serves as a national vice president of the organization, has been a member of the board of directors of Women’s American ORT (WAO) for the past 13 years.

Brenowitz is the director of programming for the Jewish Community Center in Palo Alto. She has served on the board of Keddem Congregation, a community-led, Reconstructionist Jewish congregation in Palo Alto. She has also been involved with Dancing with Miriam Women’s Seder.

Sinai Nursery holds graduation play

Sinai Nursery will hold its annual graduation play on Wednesday, May 19. The community is invited to attend and celebrate with pre-K youngsters who will soon be moving onto kindergarten. The play offers prospective parents an opportunity to understand Sinai, the “little school with a big heart.”

Three-day trip for seniors “Celebrate Spring”

The Addison-Penzak Jewish Community Center has organized a custom three days/two nights tour for seniors that includes accommodations at the Chukchansi Gold Resort, an excursion on the Sierra Rail, a day in Yosemite, and a cruise on Bass Lake.
