Jewish Study Network takes on assimilation

According to the National Jewish Population Study of the United Jewish Communities that was published in 2001, Jews in the western region of the United States are less likely to be involved in the Jewish community and Jewish ritual.

Considering the large and vibrant population of Los Angeles, that would seem to indicate that the region of Northern California is trailing with an even greater gap when it comes to lighting Shabbat candles, attending Passover Seders and fasting on Yom Kippur.

According to the same study, only 22% of Jews in the western region give money to the Federation. The rates of intermarriage continue to climb. Is there anything that can stop this juggernaut that we call assimilation from ravaging the Jewish community?

Statistics show that Jews who receive a quality Jewish education are more likely to affiliate with the Jewish community. One of the challenges to the Jewish community in Northern California is that there is a lack of inspiring and knowledgeable Jewish educators.

Watch out assimilation! Jewish education in the South Bay has a new face. In fact, it has several new faces. Emerging as a significant force in the sphere of high-content, quality Jewish education is the team of dynamic families known as the Jewish Study Network.

The JSN is an association of Jewish scholars who have come together to share their knowledge of Jewish tradition with the general Jewish public of the Bay Area. By partnering with community organizations that include the Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley, Hillel of Silicon Valley, Kehillah Jewish High School and South Peninsula Hebrew Day School, the JSN has managed to reach out to hundreds of Jews with high-quality content.

With cooperation from all the major synagogues and temples in the area, the JSN has been giving classes at six different locations in the South Bay and has managed to expose hundreds of people to a new and vibrant approach to their heritage.
